A penny saved is a dollar earned!

I personally LOVE few things more than finding a good deal.

Why pay retail when you can find it online for so much less?

In this economy, every dollar counts, right!?!

So it is in that vein that I want to help you all find better deals on the things we all spend our hard earned money on.

Deal of the day sites
These fun little sites offer a very limited number of items at a heavy discount.  Some sites only offer one item, but again, at a tremendous price.  Here’s the catch:  The item(s) change daily.  So your time to “think about it” is limited.

Here are some of my favorite Deal of the Day Sites:

Woot.com
Ebay Daily Deals
Amazon Daily Deals (Amazon even has a “lighting deal” every hour)
The Cheapskate (This guy can find some pretty sweet deals!)

There is another breed of savings site out there as well.  I call them “tracker” sites.  These are sites where anyone that spots a great online deal can post it and the community will move the deal up if it is good and down if it is not-so-good.

Here are some of my favorite Deal Tracker sites:

The Daily Checkout
Deals.Woot.com
Deal Sucker

These are just a few of my favorites.  I could go on and on (and almost did in a recent radio interview), so please feel free to add any of your favorite deal sites in the comments below.

Happy Deal Hunting!

Best Computer Diagnostic Tool? Google

(Pic courtesy of LifeHacker.com)

I’ve been saying this for years.  If you need help, computer related or otherwise, there is most likely an answer on Google.  A recent survey from Life Hacker confirms it.

When asked “What is your favorite site for computer diagnoses?”, the majority said Google!  Those in the know, know to use this powerful tool!  The process even has a cool name:  ”Crowd-Sourcing”.

Here are the basics of crowd-sourcing:

  • Google is still the most popular and arguably the best search engin on the internet.
  • The internet is FULL of people that have already experienced and solved the exact problem you are facing.
  • They post their story, and their fix.
  • Google indexes it, and has it ready for your next search.

In short, you type in your error message/problem and Google finds the article from the guy/gal half a world away that already has figured out the solution.

So the next time you are in a quandary, give Google a try.  You may be surprised at just how self sufficient you become!

You CAN have flash on your Iphone (no Jailbreak or Hack required)

Apparently, you can have flash on your Iphone. Thanks to an app on the Itunes App Store called Cloud Browse, you can go to flash enabled sites directly from your Iphone!

(Don’t have an Iphone, but you do have an Android or Windows based smart phone? Check out Skyfire. Skyfire is already available and 1000% better then Cloud Browse for getting flash to your mobile device. Problem is that is isn’t available for Iphone…yet…)

Keep in mind that this is basically a way to connect your Iphone to another real computer and have that computer stream the flash and audio back to your phone.  So the frame rate is awful, but the audio is surprisingly good!

Also, be VERY security aware while using this. You ARE connecting your phone to a 3rd party machine, so NO logging into ANYTHING! I wouldn’t log into Facebook, bank accounts, or even your gmail through this app.

Here is what you need to do if you want to try it for yourself:

  1. Go to the App Store on your phone
  2. Search for Cloud Browse
  3. Download the Free App
  4. Launch it
  5. If you get an error about too many anonymous users, just let it keep trying until it connects (give it at least a few full minutes)
  6. Hit the “web” button at the bottom
  7. Type the site you would like to visit

I’ve attached a pic of me playing around with it.  Check it out for yourself and post your thoughts in the comments below!

(Notice all of the flash objects on this page! You can actually see and use them! Goodbye blue cube of death!)
